Reflections ... on Visits to Reggio Emilia
Reflections on Early Childhood Education & Care is a collection of papers published by the British Association for Early Childhood Education to mark the first showings of the Exhibition ‘The Hundred Languages of Children’ in Newcastle Upon Tyne and London in the summer of 1997. Whilst not directly related to this renowned exhibition from the municipality of Reggio Emilia in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy, all the contributors to Reflections have drawn on their experience of observing and talking with the educators in the municipal infant-toddler centres and preschools of Reggio Emilia.

"Staff working in the Reggio Emilia pre-schools dedicate a great deal of time to considering and documenting the children's responses to their initiatives and to following up children's own ideas in ways which are sensitive to their authentic questions and which respect their particular levels of understanding. Rathe1 than a simplistic emphasis on outcomes, there is a deep appreciation of processes leading to intellectual development. which include abstract as well as concrete constructs. When the children move on to formal learning in primary school at the age of six. they are seen to have an 'extra pocket' where they can store the richness of their teaming in the pre-schools. to be drawn upon later.."
