Ambleside Information
How to get there
By train:
The nearest station is 5 miles away in Windermere. Trains run approximately hourly from the westcoast mainline station at Oxenholme through to Windermere, and take about 15 minutes.
By car:
Ambleside is approximately 20 miles (35 minutes driving) north west off the M6 junction 36 (Kendal). It can also be reached from the north, driving through the central lake district from Penrith. The campus itself is at the north end of the village, signposted off the main A591 road.
From the south: Come off the M6 at junction 36. Take the A590 towards Kendal, then the A591 towards Windermere. Continue 5 miles past Windermere on the same road to reach Ambleside.
From the north and east: There are a number of routes which can be taken. If there is a possibility of wintry weather, please check conditions online or by listening to local radio.
From the north, via Penrith:
Take the M6 south, or the A66 west to Penrith. At Penrith join the A592 south to Ullswater, continuing on the same road past the lake up and over Kirkstone Pass (beware of steep gradients!). After Kirkstone Pass follow the sign to turn right to Ambleside. This route will take you through some stunningly beautiful lakeland scenery.
Alternative routes from the north and east: Follow the signs to Kendal from the M6 junction 38 at Tebay or junction 37 near Sedburgh. Once at Kendal, follow the A591 to Windermere. Continue past Windermere on the same road for 5 miles.
